Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) Exam Prep (ended)

This 12-week live online course is designed to prepare uncertified ophthalmic assistants to take the certification exam necessary for the COA certification. The International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (ICAHPO) – formerly known as JCAHPO - has termed this uncertified-to-COA track as “COA-A3,”

Entry level information will be taught in the following 22 content areas designated by IJCAHPO for this certification track:

Patient Evaluation
History and Documentation, Visual Assessment, Visual Field Testing, Pupil Assessment, Tonometry, Keratometry, Ocular Motility Testing, Lensometry, Refraction, Retinoscopy, and Refinement, Biometry, Supplementary Examination.

Assisting with Interventions and Procedures
Microbiology, Pharmacology, Surgical Assisting, Ophthalmic Patient Services and Education,
General Medical Knowledge 

Corrective Lenses
Optics and Spectacles, Contact Lenses

Ophthalmic Imaging, Photography and Videography

Office and Clinical Skills
Equipment Maintenance and Repair, Medical Ethics, Legal, and Regulatory Issues

Admission Requirements:
High school graduate or equivalent
Participants must be employed in a setting where they will be able to work 1,000 hours to practice and develop skills under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.

Cost per Student: $1,100 (excludes books/study resources and the certification exam).
