Description:
This course fulfills Minnesota’s Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB) requirements, for an entry level Emergency Medical Technician. This course will provide review in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS). This course will also provide instruction in: (1) patient assessment, (2) recognition of specific signs/symptoms of a variety of topics, (3) care/management of the ill and injured patient from scene size-up through the transport process, (4) recognition of hazardous material incidents, mass causality incidents (MCI), triage, 5) and specific interventions as outlined by the EMSRB and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Following successful completion of the course the candidate will be eligible to sit for the NREMT Psychomotor examination and the NREMT written exam. This course is designed to produce entry level EMT’s who have transferred their skills from in-hospital to out-of-hospital practice.

The candidate will be required to complete a minimum of ten (10) simulated patient interactions in which they can assess simulated patients using the techniques learned in the classroom, previous experience and training and apply them to simulated patient care. The candidate will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in both the course and the Lab setting to complete their Field Experience component. The candidate will be required to document a minimum of 10 patient interactions, in FISDAP, to complete their ten-patient interaction requirement.

This course follows the textbook and is comprised of:
  • 8 Units
  • Written lecture and powerpoints
  • Mandatory and Refresher videos
  • Weekly Zoom meetings and NREMT Skills Verification Session (Skills Week)
Course Overview:
  1. Upon successful completion of all aspects of the course, candidates will be eligible, and recommended, to take the NREMT Cognitive exam (at a Pearson/VUE Testing Site) and take the NREMT psychomotor exam (held at RCTC Heintz Center, Rochester).
  2. Candidates must successfully pass the background study as outlined by the EMSRB and NREMT. Any felony on your record is your responsibility to report to the EMSRB and NREMT and may have an impact on your ability to obtain your NREMT certification.  As part of the background study process, candidates will be required to complete fingerprinting process as directed by the state.  Cost for the fingerprinting process is the student's responsibility and is separate from the course cost. 
  3. This course uses the standards set forth by the EMSRB and the NREMT, and in some areas this course exceeds the requirements.
Course Prerequisites:
  • Current unrestricted State of Minnesota Advanced Provider licensure (MD, DO, PA, NP, RN, CRNA, etc.)
  • Current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider (2020 Curriculum)
Mandatory course requirements
  • Requires National Incident Management System (NIMS) course completion (NIMS 100, 200, and 700)
  • Requires completion of AWAR 160 for hazardous materials awareness level
  • Requires the student to obtain 10 simulated patient interactions
  • Requires mastery of 6 required NREMT Skills and RCTC Specific Skills confirmed by NREMT Psychomotor Exam
  • Clinical Component IS NOT optional and is required by EMSRB and NREMT, and MUST BE completed prior to NREMT Psychomotor Testing
  • Candidates must complete the Immunization and Vaccination forms PRIOR to ANY Clinical being completed.
COVID-19 Addendum
  • All people who have not been vaccinated are strongly encouraged to wear a face covering in accordance with MDH and CDC recommendations until they are fully vaccinated. 
  • Those who choose to wear masks are encouraged to do so, regardless of the reason
  • Mayo Clinic Ambulance Services requires various PPE requirements while on your Field Experiences.
  • In order to conduct field experiences, Mayo Clinic requires COVID-19 full series vaccination (Pfizer 2 shot, J & J 1 shot, Moderna 2 shot). Booster shots not required but encouraged.
