Class Structure
This (WIOA-Eligible) course consists of 70 hours of online/virtual training and a 100-hour hands-on internship that provides necessary skills and knowledge to gain employment in a rapidly growing field as a Pharmacy Technician.

This course includes:
-Interactive online review with an instructor
-Virtual lab practice of specific skills & proficiencies
-Separate 100-hour clinical experience/internship coordinated at an approved pharmacy or hospital setting



Virtual Sessions scheduled from 5:30-7:00pm on:
-April 6th, 2024
-April 20th, 2024
-May 3rd, 2024
-May 17th, 2024

All online content must be submitted via D2L by May 24th, 2024




Clinical internships will be arranged in your area, as available, and will likely start in January - April - this is flexible and dependent on your home campus' clinical process.



Content
Coursework includes learning medical terminology related to common pharmacy work orders, and reading, interpreting, and dispensing of prescriptions. Students will also learn dosage calculations, conversions, error checking, and inventory control along with billing, coding, and reimbursement guidelines. This course has been updated to meet revised PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) curriculum standards & is considered a PTCB-approved training program.

Upon Completion

After successfully completing the required training and 100-hour clinical experience, students will receive a certificate of completion. Students are encouraged to increase their marketability by taking the (optional) national exam administered by the PTCB which leads to the credential known as Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). 

 
Please Note

1. General requirements to take this course:
-Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED
-Active participation in all virtual classes is mandatory
-Ability to pass
DHS-approved background study is mandatory
-Availability to attend a 100-hour clinical experience- likely scheduled during daytime hours
-Proof of updated immunizations and a clear background study will be required prior to receiving a clinical assignment.

2. Select the "Home Campus" that is closest to the geographical area you prefer to complete a clinical experience.


3.  Course fee does not include:
-Textbook & workbook (~$130)
- Registration fee to Board of Pharmacy (~$35)

-Background study fingerprinting fee: (~$10)
-Costs associated with drug testing (~$35) or updating vaccinations
-Fee to register for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Exam - This exam is optional

4. Registration in this course does not guarantee clinical placement. Inability to pass a DHS-approved background study or seven-panel drug screen may result in delayed externship placement or, potentially, a general rejection for clinical placement. If you have been arrested, charged or convicted of any criminal offense, you should investigate the impact that the arrest, charge or conviction may have on your chances of employment in the field you intend to study or on your chances to obtain federal, state, and other higher education financial aid.
