Next Generation Nursing Assistant – Train, Test, Work
(Hybrid D2L-EGF Campus-Crookston Clinical)

Your healthcare career starts here! This Nursing Assistant course is approved by the Minnesota Department of Health. Learn basic nursing skills including how to take vital signs, provide personal cares, and mobility assistance. Become prepared to work in nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities and home care agencies. Be guided by a team of registered nurses who care about your success!

This hybrid course includes an online D2L component, required in-person East Grand Forks lab sessions, and in-person Crookston clinical sessions. Please ensure that your schedule allows and you have adequate transportation for each in-person session. These are mandatory dates and times for the course hour requirements. Access to the internet (Chrome browser, Zoom app) and a computer is required.


Students who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant Competency Evaluation to be placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. The cost of a single Knowledge test and a single Skills test is included in this class. The clinical sessions and skills test require wearing scrubs. One set of scrubs (top and bottom) is included with this class. Please enter your preferred size when registering.

Student Enrollment Options

This course is included in the Next Generation Nursing Assistant – Train, Test, Work initiative. For accepted candidates, this Next Generation Nursing Assistant – Train, Test, Work course, and registry testing, are available tuition-free thanks to State of Minnesota funding to help with the nursing assistant workforce shortage. Participants are required to work as a nursing assistant after training completion.

Candidates will be contacted prior to class start by a member of the Minnesota State - Distance Minnesota Team to verify training eligibility and discuss class and employment expectations. Please understand that this is a commitment to not only train and pass the test, but also to work in the field as a nursing assistant.

Candidates must be 16 years of age or older as of April 10, 2024, and be eligible to work in the United States to participate in this course. Candidates must pass a Minnesota DHS background study, including fingerprinting, and health screening for clinical session; the costs are included in this class.

Individuals currently employed in long-term care, individuals not planning on working as a nursing assistant, or those needing to take a course only to fulfill an educational pre-requisite will be directed to other training options.

Testing Dates
  • Test events will be scheduled for the week of May 13th.
  • Candidates must the pass the Nursing Assistant Competency Evaluation to be placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
  • This evaluation has two parts, a Knowledge test and a Skills test.
  • Logon/Arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to test start time with your government-issued photo ID.
  • Candidates will be assigned to one online Knowledge test.
      • Two web-enabled devices are required to run Zoom and Chrome.
      • Candidates have a maximum of two (2) hours to answer seventy (70) multiple-choice questions in English.
      • An oral/audio test option is also available, when selected in the candidates TMU profile prior to testing.
  • Candidates will be assigned to one in-person Skills test.
      • Candidates will demonstrate up to four (4) randomly selected skill tasks for an RN Test Observer.
      • Candidates have a maximum of thirty (30) minutes to complete tasks with a live actor or manikin, as specified by the skill.
      • Scrubs are required to be admitted to testing, included in this class.
      • Candidates must wear close-toed shoes and pull back long hair.
  • Tests can be taken in any order.
  • Retesting after a failed result will be available.

Knowledge tests are completed online, do not come to campus for this test.

Attendance is mandatory for all online and in-person class hours.
To cancel or reschedule, Northland WDS must be notified seven (7) business days before the scheduled class orientation date.
Refunds will not be issued after that date.
