Next Generation Nursing Assistant – Train, Test, Work
(Hybrid D2L-EGF Campus-Crookston Clinical)
Your healthcare career starts here! This Nursing Assistant course is approved by the Minnesota Department of Health. Learn basic nursing skills including how to take vital signs, provide personal cares, and mobility assistance. Become prepared to work in nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities and home care agencies. Be guided by a team of registered nurses who care about your success!
This hybrid course includes an online D2L component, required in-person East Grand Forks lab sessions, and in-person Crookston clinical sessions. Please ensure that your schedule allows and you have adequate transportation for each in-person session. These are mandatory dates and times for the course hour requirements. Access to the internet (Chrome browser) and a computer is required.
Students who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant Competency Evaluation to be placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. The cost of a single knowledge test and a single skills test is included in this class. The clinical sessions and skills test require wearing scrubs. One set of scrubs (top and bottom) is included with this class. Please enter your preferred size when registering.

Student Enrollment Options
This course is included in the Next Generation Nursing Assistant – Train, Test, Work initiative. For accepted candidates, this Next Generation Nursing Assistant – Train, Test, Work course, and registry testing, are available tuition-free thanks to State of Minnesota funding to help with the nursing assistant workforce shortage. Participants are required to work as a nursing assistant after training completion.
Candidates will be contacted prior to class start by a member of the Minnesota State - Distance Minnesota Team to verify training eligibility and discuss class and employment expectations. Please understand that this is a commitment to not only train and pass the test, but also to work in the field as a nursing assistant.
Candidates must be 16 years of age or older as of June 4, 2024 and be eligible to work in the United States to participate in this course. Candidates must pass a Minnesota DHS background study, including fingerprinting, and health screening for clinical session; the costs are included in this class.
Individuals currently employed in long-term care, individuals not planning on working as a nursing assistant, or those needing to take a course only to fulfill an educational pre-requisite will be directed to other training options.

- Candidates will use their existing StarID to log into D2L. If candidates have not been a student at any Minnesota State Institution since May 2013, a StarID can be activated after registration. Verify if you have an existing StarID at starid.minnstate.edu.
- Online course content will be available June 4, 2024. You are welcome to begin working on the course content at any time after the orientation session.
- 26 course hours are dedicated to the online course content.

Testing Dates
- Candidates must the pass the Nursing Assistant Competency Evaluation to be placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
- This evaluation has two parts, a knowledge test and a skills test.
- Logon/Arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to test start time with your government-issued photo ID.
- Candidates will be assigned to one online knowledge test, times TBD.
- Candidates will be assigned to one in-person skills test

- Scrubs are required to be admitted to Skills testing, included in this class. Candidates must wear close-toed shoes and pull back long hair.
- Tests can be taken in any order.
- Retesting after a failed result will be available.

To cancel or reschedule, Northland WDS must be notified seven (7) business days before the scheduled class orientation date.
