Sand Tray Play Therapy Fundamentals

Workshop Overview: 
In this interactive and entertaining class, you will learn the basic concepts and techniques of sand tray play therapy‑‑from choosing figures to interpreting the process and contents of a tray.  Day one of this two-day training will lay the groundwork of sand tray play therapy, including the history of sand tray, the types of sand trays, and how to interpret sand trays. Day two will focus on sand tray play therapy from an Adlerian perspective. Experience this powerful healing tool while you learn and have fun!

Objectives:
After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 5 types of figures used in sand tray play therapy.
  2. List and describe the steps for a sand tray play therapy session.
  3. Describe 5 factors used in interpreting sand trays in sand tray play therapy.
  4. Describe how you might decide to use a non-directed tray vs. a semi-directed tray.
  5. List two factors important in the processing of sand trays.
  6. Describe one way they can use the sand tray play therapy process to build relationships with clients.
  7. Describe two methods for using the sand tray play therapy process to explore client's unique life style.
  8. Describe one method for using the sand tray play therapy process to help clients gain insight into their patterns of thinking, feeling, and/or behaving.
  9. Describe one way for using the sand tray play therapy process to teach clients new skills, behaviors, and attitudes.
  10. Describe one method for using the sand tray play therapy process to work with parents of child clients.
  11. Generate developmentally appropriate sand tray prompts for clients.

Presenter Information: 

Nikole Pauli, LMHC, NCC, RPT-S, C-AdPT

Nikki was trained by the Dr. Terry Kottman, creator of Adlerian Play Therapy. In addition to teaching for LEAPT (League of Extraordinary Adlerian Play Therapists), Nikki runs a successful private practice in her college turned home town of Cedar Falls, IA. She is passionate about walking alongside adults, children, families, and couples. In addition to counseling, Nikki serves as a high school youth director at Orchard Hill Church. As a former collegiate and professional track and field athlete, Nikki now uses that passion to coach high school hurdlers and teach classes at Ninja U, a ninja obstacle gym she co-owns with her husband, Jacob. 
 
Outside of serving those in her community, Nikki enjoys spending time with her husband and their four children. You can find them enjoying the outdoors as often as possible or cuddled up reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Series of Unfortunate Events.

Nikki finds joy in time spent laughing with her people, dirtying her hands gardening, getting in a good workout, and enjoying good food.
