Nursing Assistants wishing to be placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry must take the Minnesota Nurse Aide competency exam for certification as a Nurse Aide. To take the exam in Minnesota, you must qualify under one of the following routes:
 
  • Test/Course/Class needs to be dropped by Friday before the test day to qualify for a refund/Reschedule.
 
  • You have completed a state-approved nurse aide training program within the past 24 months. You will be required to take the both the Knowledge exam and the Skills exam.
  • Prove you have previously completed a state-approved nurse aide training program, have taken and passed the Nurse Aide Competency Exam (both the Knowledge and Skills exams), and are on the Minnesota Nurse Aide Registry with an expired registry status. You will be required to take the both the Knowledge exam and the Skills exam.
  • You are a candidate who does not meet either of the eligibility routes listed above. This is called a test-out candidate or challenge candidate. You will be required to take the both the Knowledge exam and the Skills exam. Examples are:
    • If you trained in another country.
    • If you have not taken a nurse aide training program.
    • If you have not worked as a nurse aide in the last 24 months.
    • If you are from another state and do not qualify for reciprocity in Minnesota or are not in current status on transferring Registry.
Test-out dates may be canceled due to lack of registration.

Registered candidates must arrive at St Cloud Technical & Community College Health Sciences Building Room H-027 at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  1. You must bring a United Stated Government Issued ID. The ID must be signed, unexpired and photo-bearing. If you do not have a current, official US government signed identification form, then you must bring 2 forms of signature bearing identification, one must be photo-bearing as well. You can see examples of acceptable ID on page 10 of the Candidate Handbook.
  2. You must be in full clinical attire (scrubs), no open-toed shoes are allowed, and long hair must be pulled back.
  3. Please bring a watch with a second hand.  (The evaluator reserves the right to refuse testing if these standards are not met).
