The Blessings of Growing Up GEECHEE: A Past to Cherish, a Future to
#: CBEP    ID: 9154    Section: 121824-2
Description:
At age eleven Natasha begins her reign as the Gullah Poet, on the small wooden center stage of the Penn Heritage Days Celebration, an annual cultural festival on Gullah Gullah Island(St. Helena Island, South Carolina.)  By sixteen, Natasha was widely known throughout South Carolina and had become the original Gullah tour guide for the South Carolina Gullah Festival. At the age of 17, Natasha was invited by the University of North Carolina to participate in a language learning lecture.  As the only Gullah representative in attendance, she engaged and enthralled professors, as many shared future hopes of building curriculums based on the Gullah language and origin(s).  A year later, the University of South Carolina also had a lecture focusing on Gullah: dialect/language.  Join Natasha for a lecture about the struggles, blessings, trials, and triumphs growing up as a GEECHEE GAL in Gullah Gullah Island.
