This Nursing Assistant course, approved by the Minnesota Department of Health, equips you with essential skills, such as taking vital signs, providing personal cares, and assisting with mobility. Prepare for a rewarding career as a nursing assistant or nurse aide in senior care facilities. This course includes visits from local employers who are hiring now!

This hybrid program combines online coursework with in-person lab sessions on East Grand Forks campus, and in-person clinical sessions at Benedictine Living Community in Crookston. Please ensure that your schedule allows and you have adequate transportation for each in-person session. These are mandatory dates and times for the course hour requirements. Access to the internet (Chrome browser, Zoom application) and a computer is required. If you cannot commit to attending every session, please do not enroll in this course.

Candidates must be 16 years of age or older as of January 9, 2025 and be eligible to work in the United States to participate in this course. Candidates must pass a Minnesota DHS background study, including fingerprinting, and health screening for clinical session. The costs for these screenings are included in this class. Candidates must be able to travel to screening locations.

Upon successful completion, you'll receive a certificate and be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant Competency Exam, which qualifies you for the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. The cost of testing and one set of scrubs (top and bottom) is included with this class. Please enter your preferred size when registering.

Student Enrollment Options:

If accepted and eligible, you will receive free training and testing - a $1,615 value - thanks to the State of Minnesota's Next Generation Nursing Assistant – Train, Test, Work initiative. In return, participants must attend all class sessions and are expected to work as nursing assistants after completing the program. Space is limited and the course will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Individuals not planning on working as a nursing assistant, currently employed in long-term care, and those needing to take a course only to fulfill an educational prerequisite will be directed to other training options.

This course starts with an in-person orientation on January 9, 2025 and ends with the final test in February 2025.

Attendance is mandatory for everything listed below. This course requires both in-person and self-paced online components. Access to the internet (Chrome browser, Zoom application) and a computer is required. Again, attendance at all class sessions is mandatory - if you cannot commit to attending every session, please do not enroll in this course.

  • Candidates must be 16 or older as of January 9, 2025 to attend the course. If you are under 18, parent or guardian must come with you to orientation to sign the required Release of Information form.

  • Candidates will use their existing StarID to log into D2L. If candidates have not been a student at any Minnesota State Institution since May 2013, a StarID can be activated after registration. Verify if you have an existing StarID at starid.minnstate.edu
  • Online course content will be available January 9, 2025. You are welcome to begin working on the course content at any time after the orientation session.
  • 23 course hours are dedicated to the online course content.

Testing Dates
  • Candidates must the pass the Nursing Assistant Competency Evaluation to be placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
  • This evaluation has two parts, a knowledge test and a skills test.
  • Logon/Arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to test start time with your government-issued photo ID.
  • Candidates will be assigned to one online knowledge test

  • Candidates will be assigned to one in-person skills test event with a specific start time

    • Scrubs are required to be admitted to Skills testing, included in this class. Candidates must wear close-toed shoes and pull back long hair.
  • Tests can be taken in any order.
  • Retesting after a failed result will be available.

Attendance is mandatory for all online and in-person class hours.
To cancel or reschedule, Northland WDS must be notified seven (7) business days before the scheduled class orientation date.
Refunds will not be issued after that date.
