Developed by expert nurses with decades of teaching experience, Allied Dental Clinical Sedation is one of the only intravenous sedation certification trainings approved by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry.

This one-of-a-kind training course includes an online introductory unit (6 hours) paired with a single weekend of hands-on clinical training (14 hours) to provide dental hygienists and dental assistants with the skills necessary to initiate, maintain, monitor and remove intravenous (IV) lines, and/or aid in administration of medications into an existing IV line under the supervision of a dentist with sedation/general anesthesia certification.

The online pre-work for this course is self-paced and must be completed on your own before the first day of in-person clinical training. Pre-work consists of reviewing 3 content modules and passing 3 quizzes, and should take approximately 6 hours.

Clinical training will be held in person at the South Central College - North Mankato campus.

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate through classroom and clinical experience how to initiate, maintain, monitor and remove IV lines
  2. Aid in administration of medication into an existing IV line under supervision of a dentist
  3. Demonstrate airway management, monitoring device application and interpretation, preparation of emergency medication and medical emergency management
  4. Demonstrate successful venipuncture (6 simulated, 2 human subjects)

  • Anatomy and physiology review pertinent for dental clinical sedation
  • Airway management
  • Cardiac monitoring application and interpretation
  • Infection prevention
  • Intravenous fluid and medication review specific to dental sedation
  • Moderate sedation guidelines and pharmacology
  • Preparation for emergency sedation situations
  • Simulated and human IV insertions

Prerequisites:

  • Must be licensed Dental Hygienist or Dental Assistant
  • Must have current Health Care Provider CPR certification
  • Must be nitrous oxide certified
CEUs/Contact Hours:
This program is designed to meet the MN Board of Dentistry requirements for 20 contact hours or 21.4 CEUs applicable towards license renewal for Dental Assistant or Dental Hygienist. Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion detailing the contact hours and CEUs earned.

Online Pre-Work:
Upon registration, you will receive a registration confirmation email with instructions to activate your Minnesota State StarID. Follow the instructions to set up your StarID and password. These will be your login credentials for D2L where you will complete your pre-work for this course: https://cect.learn.minnstate.edu.

Approximately 2 weeks prior to the course start date, you will receive an email at the email address you provided during registration with a reminder to log in to D2L and complete your pre-work.

Online pre-work must be completed before the first day of in-person clinical training, including reviewing all course content in D2L AND completing the 3 quizzes.
