Description:
The second lecture centers on the catacombs, underground burial complexes, and the associated rituals. We will examine the use of catacombs for burials, their architectural characteristics, and the ceremonies held within them. Particular attention will be given to the Roman catacombs and their role in early Christianity. This lecture will also discuss how burial practices reflected the beliefs and fears of ancient Romans and Greeks regarding mortality and the beyond.
