By Her Hand: Italian Women Artists from 1500-1800
#: CBEP    ID: 9154    Section: 032525-2
Description:
Until the 19th century, women artists often get short shrift. However, in the last few decades, some wonderful Italian women artists from the Renaissance through the Rococo eras are finally getting their due. Most were acclaimed during their lifetime then nearly forgotten until recently. Among the artists discussed are Sofonisba Anguissola who was born in Cremona but became a court painter to Philip II of Spain; Lavinia Fontana, the first female career artist in Western Europe; Artemisia Gentileschi who worked throughout Italy and England; Elizabetta Sirani who painted brilliantly but died mysteriously at the age of 27; and Rosalba Carriera who was famous for her pastel portraits in the 18th century.
