Description:
This hour-based course is designed to provide the student with instruction and practice in phlebotomy techniques so that the student can successfully perform them upon course completion.
Topics covered:
1. The role of the phlebotomy technician, including scope of practice, interpersonal skills, and ethics
2. Foundational care skills such as ensuring accurate patient/specimen identification and following infection prevention practices
3. Anatomy and physiology, including common tests related to each body system
4. Fundamentals of the circulatory system, blood composition, and hemostasis
5.Evacuated tube systems, syringe transfer devices, and capillary collection systems, including guides to tube additives, and order of draw
6. Adaptations to blood collection procedures that may be required for specific patient populations or due to various patient conditions
7. Steps required to protect specimen quality and integrity
8. Communication with other healthcare team members and with a variety of patient populations (e.g., pediatric, geriatric, non-native speakers of English).
Prerequisites:
- 18 years of age or older
- Proof of Immunizations - Documentation from a medical professional for the following immunizations must be presented at the time of registration:
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
- Hepatitis B (3-Part Series: First shot must be done before registration and the final shot must be completed by the time the clinical portion begins)
- Varicella/Chicken Pox
- Tdap (Tetanus-Diptheria-Pertussis)
- Seasonal Influenza (Current Season)
- TB/Mantoux (Must be current and completed within 90 days prior to registration. Please note that TB testing cannot be completed in one visit to your clinic. The process may take multiple visits and up to one week to complete. Please allow sufficient time to complete the test).
- Covid-19 (minimum 2 shots)
- If you do not have records for any of the above immunizations and think you may have immunity already, you will need to contact your medical provider and ask for “immunity status testing” or a “titer test” to obtain proof of your immunity. Please note that titer testing cannot be completed in one visit to your clinic. The process may take multiple visits and up to one week to complete. Please allow sufficient time to complete the test.
- State of MN DHS Background Check: Please bring a copy of your Driver License or State ID to the registration session, as it is required for background check processing.
- A high school diploma/GED is required in order to secure employment.

This free course is only available to students who have met the eligibility requirements for the Drive for Five Training. To determine eligibility, potential students must complete a Microsoft form to be considered for this class.
Once it is determined that you are eligible to register for the course, you will be sent step-by-step instructions on how to register. Your application will be reviewed and you will be notified once registration is complete.

Students are required to attend 100 hours of clinical (internship) and perform 100 unassisted venipunctures. Clinical location, times, and hours will be dependent on hospital availability. Students will spend 2-3 (40-hour) weeks to complete their clinical internship.
Course Cancelation Policy: For students requesting a cancelation, a full refund will be granted 5 working days before the start of a class. No refund will be made after that. A full refund will be given on all classes canceled by the school.
