Guitar Finishing Lab
In this lab students will apply a new finish to an instrument built “in the white”. Use of dyes, stains, paints as well as grain enhancement can be practiced. Students will also final sand and buff their acoustic guitars.
Course goals include:
- Prepare custom colors for instruments
- Use a variety of finishing techniques to achieve desired result
- Spray nitrocellulose lacquer on newly constructed instrument
- Final sand & polish instrument completed previous to class
Instruments to be finished must have all prep sanding done prior to the first day of class.
This course meets for a total of 40 hours

Meet Your Instructor…
Brian Boedigheimer received his diploma in guitar repair and construction from Red Wing Technical College in 1994. For 12 years he performed service for music stores throughout the St. Croix Valley area and began teaching instrument construction in 2000. In 2003 he attended the Wood Finishing Technology Program at Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) where he learned all aspects of wood finishing, conservation, restoration, and refinishing. After graduating from DCTC he was accepted into the “Preservation of Transparent Coatings” workshop held in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute and DCTC. Currently, he teaches full-time in the Guitar Repair and Building Program and in his spare time designs and builds his own line of instruments.
