Course Description:
This curriculum is designed to support a sonographer’s adult echocardiography knowledge and prepare for the ARDMS Adult Echocardiography (AE) examination. This course involves interactive videos, images, and practice quizzes that cover basic and intermediate echocardiography skills.

The course material includes information on normal cardiac anatomy and physiology, ways to obtain basic echo views, and multiple ultrasound methods to ensure that a sonographer will be able to detect many cardiac abnormalities. At the end of this course, students will be able to identify and assess valvular disease, pericardial diseases, endocarditis, right heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and common congenital findings.

This course is appropriate for those who have an echo or ultrasound background and would like to prepare for the ARDMS adult echocardiography exam while gaining the skills to perform a complete adult echocardiography exam.

Content:

This course is primarily online accompanied by an in-person skills practice and assessment. The online portion of the course must be completed within an 8 week time frame. The asynchronous online course through D2L will run from July 21st- Sept 12th, 2025. Skills and assessments will be scheduled on an individual basis with the instructor after the 8-week didactic portion of the course, between Sept 15th - Oct 3rd, 2025, which will take place at an agreed-upon location.


General requirements to take this course:
  • Must be registered with the ARDMS, have completed the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) examination, or have diploma from an accrediting school that states completion of the sonography program (exceptions can be requested and approved by course instructor).
  • Active participation in all discussion is mandatory.
  • Download of SonoSim applications to computer.
Time:  8-week course
Estimated 5hrs per week.

Dates:  July 21st – Sept 12th, 2025
  • All course content must be completed on D2L & SonoSim modules by Sept 12th, 2025.

Upon Completion:
Students will receive a certificate of completion after successfully completing the requirements and return of laptop & SonoSim equipment.

  • Students will need access to a computer with internet connection to successfully complete this course.
  • Capability to download SonoSim applications to computer.
Supported by the Helmsley Charitable Trust:
Advanced sonography training is supported by a grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to St. Cloud Technical & Community College (SCTCC). Priority for registration will be given to sonographers working at rural and underserved hospitals, clinics, and health centers throughout Minnesota, who may be eligible to participate in this training free of charge. For those working at facilities not covered by this grant, you will be provided with information on fees for the course and skills/assessment before you make a commitment to participate.


Additional Notes:
A promo-code will be available for sonographers working at facilities that qualify for the Helmsley Grant funding. Sonographers that do not qualify for the Helmsley Grant funding will be put on a waiting list and will be eligible to enter the course 1 day before the start date, if room is available.
