Health Science Reasoning Test - HSRT (North Mankato)

Description:

The Health Science Reasoning Test (HSRT) is a requirement for admission to the Nursing Program at South Central College. The HSRT is a 35-question exam that assesses a student's ability to read and interpret medical information.

The HSRT-AD exam must be taken at a South Central College campus. You will have 50 minutes to answer 35 scenario-based questions. Tests are scored on a 100-point corresponding qualitative rating (superior, strong, moderate, weak, not manifested). 

The HSRT-AD assesses the following reasoning skills, independent of clinical practice skills or health care content knowledge:

  • OVERALL Critical Thinking Skills– Sustained use of critical thinking to form reasoned judgments
  • Analysis – Accurate identification of the problem and decision-critical elements
  • Inference – Drawing warranted and logical conclusions from reasons and evidence
  • Evaluation – Assessing the credibility of claims and the strength of arguments
  • Induction – Reasoned judgment in ambiguous, risky, and uncertain contexts
  • Deduction – Reasoned judgment in precisely defined, logically rigorous context
  • Numeracy – Sustained use of critical thinking skills in quantitative contexts (quantitative reasoning)

DAY OF TEST:
- Bring a photo ID - Verification will be required prior to testing
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before the test time for check-in. If you are late, you will not be allowed to test and will not receive a refund
- No walk-in registrations will be accepted
- Paper and pencils will be provided

PROHIBITED ITEMS (NOT ALLOWED IN THE TESTING ROOM):
- Food or drink
- Textbooks or reference books of any kind
- Sunglasses, hats or a hood
- All electronic devices, including calculators and smart watches
- Personal items, including coats and backpacks, should be left at home or in your vehicle, otherwise a space will be provided. Items may be retrieved after the test.

DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS:
- For students with established accommodations, email ds@southcentral.edu to request accommodations. You must email at least one week before your test.
- For students setting up accommodations for the first time, please use our online scheduler to make an appointment with Disability Services at least two weeks before your test. Approval of accommodations is not guaranteed and is based on interview and documentation of disability.
- Disability Services is open until 4:30pm; your exam needs to be completed by this time.

REFUND POLICY:
In order to receive a full refund, you must call 507-389-7203 to cancel your registration at least 3 full business days prior to the exam date. If you are late, you will not be allowed to test and will not receive a refund.
