Course Description:
This 5-day 40-hour course prepares individuals to become skilled residential envelope retrofit installers and to perform a variety of activities to weatherize homes and make them more energy efficient, healthy, and safe. The skills-focused course combines classroom instruction and hands-on technical training. Participants will practice protocols, techniques and application necessary for competency in 15 core weatherization retrofit badges recognized by the U.S. DOE and the MN Dept of Commerce Weatherization Assistance Program.
Course content aligns with the MN Dept of Commerce Retrofitting Minnesota Standard Work Specification-Aligned Field Guide and the NREL Standard Work Specifications (SWS). Training modules include lead safety and general safety protocols; attic air sealing and insulation; roof penetrations; exterior walls; windows and doors; and subspaces. Taught by experienced industry professionals, building science and systems-thinking are used to connect theory and practice, so that participants gain insight into the context and importance of the work.
Pre-requisites:
  • Completion of OSHA10 training
  • BPI Building Science Principles Certificate
  • Basic carpentry skills, including proficiency with the following: tape measure, Skillsaws, Multitool, Sawzalls, Caulk guns, Foam guns, Nailer, Drill, Hole Saw, Handsaw
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. and sustain frequent standing, crouching, lifting, reaching, repetitive movements and crawling in tight spaces
