Class Structure: This (WIOA-Eligible) course provides students with over 40 hours of instruction and 100 hours of clinical practice in phlebotomy techniques, providing the necessary skills & knowledge to gain employment as a Phlebotomy Technician.

This course includes:
-Self-paced, online knowledge & theory
-Hands-on lab practice of specific skills & proficiencies
-Additional 100-hour (usually unpaid) clinical experience/internship coordinated at an approved clinical site


--Phlebotomy Technician 40 Hour Course--
This course is ran over 8 Sessions. Sessions will alternate between virtual lectures and in-person skills training. Students will only have 1 session per week. 

Dates for this training are to be determined. This registration serves as a waitlist for notification and registration/course information.

Additional course work will be completed independently though our online management system, D2L. All online content must be submitted by March 9 at 11:59pm.

Students are also encouraged to participate in an internship prep discussion that is scheduled half way through the course. 


Content: Equipment and procedures for blood collection by venipuncture and capillary punctures. Students will learn basic anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, specimen handling, clinical relevance of laboratory tests, safety, liability, and professional ethics.

Outcome: Students who successfully complete this course receive a certificate of completion. Students are encouraged to increase their marketability by taking the (optional) national exam administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Passing this exam leads to the credential known as PBT(ASCP).

1.  Course fee does NOT include:
-Textbook (~$120)
-Fee to register for the ASCP Exam (~$135)- This is optional
-Potential costs associated with drug testing  (~$35) or updating vaccinations


2. General requirements to take this course:
-Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED

-Active participation in all lab classes is mandatory
-Mandatory clinical rotations are normally during day hours and may require standing for 8 hours
-Proof of immunizations (Hep. B, MMR, Tetanus, Varicella, Mantoux, etc.) is required prior to receiving an internship assignment.

3. Registration in this course does not guarantee clinical placement. Inability to pass a DHS background study or seven-panel drug screen may result in delayed externship placement or, potentially, a general rejection for clinical placement. A DHS-approved background study is required prior to receiving an internship assignment.  If you have been arrested, charged or convicted of any criminal offense, you should investigate the impact that the arrest, charge or conviction may have on your chances of employment in the field you intend to study or on your chances to obtain federal, state, and other higher education financial aid.

4. A full refund is available if requested at least 5 days before the course begins.

Required Materials:
-Students will need access to a computer with internet connection to successfully complete this course.

-Scrubs are the designated uniform during clinical internships. Most sites prefer our students wear the color black, but students do not need to purchase new scrubs if they have another plain-colored set.
