Mental Health First Aid (Hybrid Course):

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an international evidence-based course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This course gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

What it covers:

• Mental health risk factors and warning signs
• Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and substance use
• A 5-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health concern or in crisis
• How to interact with a person in crisis and connect them with appropriate professional help

Course format:

• Blended course of online prep work and in-person instructor-led session
• Learners will first complete a 2-hour, self-paced online course in advance
• Next, learners participate in a 6-hour, skills based, instructor-led session
• Post work includes a final exam, post-evaluation knowledge check, and course survey

Course investment:

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course registration is $200.
Thanks to support from the Northland Student Senate, the course registration is fully covered for curent Northland students.

A certificate of completion will be provided. 
Participants must be 18 years or older per Mental Health First Aid guidelines.

Please remember all modules from the self-paced course are required to be completed PRIOR to attending the in-person session. WDS will confirm progress on these modules as needed.

For the instructor-led in-person training, please have access to your Participant Guide by either bringing your laptop/tablet, or by printing the document.
Lunch will be provided.

After the in-person session, all participants must also complete the final three modules: Final Exam, Post-Evaluation: Knowledge Check, and Post-Evaluation: Course Response. These items may be completed immediately following class. Course ending time is estimated.
