Description:
This lecture provides an overview of Dr. Buchanan’s research into aging-related scholarships. The presentation will 1)  identify and describe situations where age-related microaggressions commonly occur along with the responses by older adults to microaggressions; 2) describe key features of elderspeak and the harmful effects associated with using elderspeak; and 3) discuss the use of effective instructions by caregivers when working with persons with dementia.

Jeffrey Buchan, PhD

Dr. Jeffrey Buchanan received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2003, and completed a clinical internship and post-doctoral fellowship with an emphasis in geropsychology at the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Buchanan is currently Professor of Psychology at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he teaches a variety of courses related to clinical psychology and psychology of aging. Dr. Buchanan’s general area of expertise is in mental health and aging, although his current research focuses on understanding ineffective and harmful communication patterns between younger and older adults, particularly elderspeak, instruction types, and age-related microaggressions. He has over 50 publications in scholarly journals in disciplines such as psychology, gerontology, applied behavior analysis, and nursing.
