Nursing Assistant Knowledge and Skills Test - Winona (06-11-2026)

Description:

The two (2) parts of the Minnesota Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation (the Knowledge Test and the Skills Test), will be administered on the same day. Candidates must pass both parts in order to receive a certificate and be listed on the Minnesota Nurse Aide Registry.

TMU© Access

You must have a login to the TestMaster Universe (TMU©) website in order to test: https://mn.tmutest.com

If you recently completed a nursing assistant training program, verify with your  instructor that your training has been marked complete in TMU© at least three (3) business days before your test, so we can schedule you for the test event. 

If you are a challenge/test-out candidate, please indicate this when you register and you will be set up with a TMU© login approximately five (5) days before the test.

Knowledge Test

The Knowledge Test is an online test which consists of seventy (70) multiple-choice questions in English. You will have a maximum of two (2) hours to complete the test. An Oral/Audio test option is also available, which you must select in your TMU© profile prior to testing. 

Skills Test

During the Skills Test, you will demonstrate a set of randomly selected MDH-approved nurse aide skill tasks for an RN Test Observer. You will find a complete list of skill tasks in the Minnesota candidate handbook. You will have a maximum of thirty (30) minutes to complete your three (3) or four (4) tasks. 

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance

If you have a qualified disability or limitation, you may request special accommodations for examination. Accommodations must be approved by D&SDT-Headmaster in advance of examination. The Request for Accommodations Form 1404 MN-ADA can be found on D&SDT-Headmaster’s Minnesota webpage. This form must be submitted to D&SDT-Headmaster with required documentation listed on the second page of the ADA application in order to be reviewed for a special accommodation. Please allow additional time for your request to be approved. You will receive an email with your approved accommodations when review is completed. Actions Required Before Your Test Date

Please log in to your TMU© account at https://mn.tmutest.com a minimum of two (2) days before the date of your test and make sure that your name on your official form of ID matches exactly what is in your Headmaster/TMU© profile. If they do not match on the day of your test, you will not be allowed to test. 

What to Bring

  • You must bring a valid and appropriate US government issued, non-expired, signed photo ID to be admitted to the test (see identification section below for examples).
  • You must be in full clinical attire (scrubs) and closed-toed shoes
    • Note: You will not be admitted for testing if you are not wearing scrubs attire and appropriate shoes. This is considered a "no show" and you will have to pay for another test date.

  • Please arrive at least 20 minutes early to check-in.
  • We begin the knowledge test at 8:00 AM.
  • Late arrivals will not be allowed to test and will not receive a refund.
  • Please enter the building through Door C2 and follow signs directing you to Room 307 for check-in (see parking map below).

Identification

One form of identification which meets the following mandatory requirements:  
  • Non-expired
  • Photo-bearing
  • Signed
  • United States Government Issued

Examples of acceptable IDs are: Driver’s License, US Passport, Work Authorization Card, Alien Registration Card, and some Military or Tribal IDs (that meet all requirements).

EXCEPTION: If you do not have a current, official US government issued identification, then you must bring two (2) forms of current (not expired), official, signature bearing identifications with matching names on both. One of the two forms of identification must be photo-bearing (photo copies will not be accepted). Examples of proper identification, with matching names, include current (non-expired):
  • School ID Card with Photograph
  • Signed Voter Registration Card
  • Signed Credit/Debit (Bank) Card
  • Signed Social Security Card

Cancellation and Transfer Policy

If you need to cancel or reschedule your test date, you must call 507-453-2740 a minimum of three (3) business days prior to the test date. Leave a detailed voice message if your call is not answered which includes your name, date of your scheduled test, and your request to cancel or transfer to another date. Refund or transfer requests after this timeframe will only be considered if there are extenuating circumstance beyond your control. If you are late, fail to appear, do not have the correct identification, and/or your name in TMU© does not match your form of identification, you will not be admitted for testing and your test fee will not be refunded.

Reimbursable Expenses for Nursing Assistant Training and Testing

Nursing assistants who pay for the cost of their training and testing prior to employment are eligible for reimbursement.

  • The nursing assistant has one (1) year from passing the test and placement on the Registry to turn in receipts requesting reimbursement.
  • The facility has 90 days to reimburse the nursing assistant.
  • If the nursing assistant does not remain employed as a nursing assistant for 90 days, the nursing home is under no obligation to reimburse the nursing assistant.
  • The first nursing home the nursing assistant stays at for a least 90 days would then be responsible to reimburse the nursing assistant if it has been 1 year or less since completion of the test.
  • Only certified nursing homes or boarding care homes are required to reimburse a nursing assistant.
