This professional development will provide an introduction to reading and writing foundations, development, assessment and intervention for Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, School Psychologists, Educators and other related professionals who work with children and adolescents with disabilities and/or children who struggle to learn to read and write. Foundational knowledge of literacy and development of school-age language and literacy will be addressed as well as comprehensive clinical assessment, informal assessment evidence-based intervention for language and literacy.
Held on the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus in the state of the art Clinical Sciences Building, participants will also be able to work concurrently with children enrolled in Camp Maverick: Rec N' Read. A four week literacy and recreation camp. Course participants will be able to apply skills learned in class with children who are attending camp (12 hours during the 28 hour professional development). Course Objectives and Completion Requirements
1. Describe the process of learning to read and write in typical and disordered children.
2. Describe the professional roles in literacy development, assessment and intervention.
3. Identify and define different profiles of literacy disorders.
4. Plan and implement a formal and informal data-drive language-literacy assessment protocol (including administration, analyzing data, interpreting findings and communicating results).
5. Develop an intervention tool-kit for use in one's own practice.
6. Write an intervention plan based on language and literacy assessment findings.
7. Summarize evidence-based practice on literacy intervention or instruction for school-age children and adolescents.
8. Describe reading and writing development and achievement among special populations of particular interest to course participants.
9. Evaluate own intervention techniques and suggest changes to improve implementation of literacy assessment and intervention.
Completion of course will be determined by attendance and reflection and coaching sessions participation.

Cost and Registration
Course fee: Early registration (prior to May 1st) is $500 per participant. After May 1st, $600 per participant.
Refund Policy: Full refund will be given if cancellation occurs prior to June 1st, after June 1st, participant is eligible for partial refund. Course may be cancelled due to low enrollment, if provider cancels the course, a full refund will be available.
