Effective January 2, 2014 the State of Minnesota mandates that pilot/escort drivers escorting over dimensional loads in the state be trained and hold a current Minnesota Department of Public Safety Certification. Classes are offered as open enrollment classes throughout the state and as contract classes with individual companies and organizations. Advanced registration is required.

Reference: Minnesota Administrative Rules
Register for the 8-hour certification class if you are a Pilot Car Driver with an expired Minnesota certification, have never been licensed, or were licensed in another state.
The certification is valid for four years. Upon expiration, you are able to extend your license for one additional four-year period by completing the 4-hour re-certification course within 90 days of expiration. When that four-year renewal license expires, the full 8-hour certification is required again.

This 8-hour certification course curriculum includes:
  • Driver requirements
  • Vehicle requirements
  • Permitting and reading an over dimensional load permit
  • Pilot/Escort vehicle positioning and maneuvering
  • Authority while escorting, flagging and traffic control
  • Insurance
  • Pre- trip planning and meeting
  • Communication
  • Height pole usage
  • Liability issues
  • Ground clearance
  • Route surveys and how to conduct them
  • Hours of service
  • Railroad grade crossing safety
Register for the 8-hour Minnesota Certification class if you are a Pilot/Escort driver who has either never been licensed or a driver with a license in a state other than Minnesota. Drivers must attend a full Minnesota-approved certification course every eight years.

Register for the 4-hour Recertification class if you are a Pilot Car driver whose current Minnesota certification license is due to expire in the next 90 days. A single recertification is allowed 4 years after a full certification, as long as it is completed prior to expiration or within 90 days after expiration. This course is available in-person or online. Contact WDS@northlandcollege.edu for help scheduling a campus location for the online course.

Enrollment will be accepted in order of the date that the registration is received.
