Course Description:
In this course you will learn venipuncture and special collection procedures. Quality management and legal issues, specimen collections, documentation and lab procedures will be covered. You will acquire the basic knowledge of the circulatory system as it pertains to phlebotomy. Safety and infection control measures are extensively explored. Clinic lab is included for hands on practice. Scrubs are required. Must be 18 years of age.

Upon completion of your classroom, an internship arranged by your instructor with a local health care facility is available. The standard internship is 60 hours with up to 100 hours available if seeking further credentials. This program was not designed to align with any specific licensing standard. Groups such as ASCP, AMT, ACA or other Phlebotomy Technician Certification programs have their own requirements for certification. Please contact them directly to inquire about their specific credentialing requirements before you begin your internship.

Prerequisites: 
- Qualifying reading assessment score via the Accuplacer exam in the HTC Testing Center, or transcripts confirming qualifications for a test waiver.  (See below for further instructions on the test scheduling and test waiver process). 
- 18 years of age or older 
- Proof of Immunizations - Documentation
from a medical professional for the following immunizations must be presented at the time of registration: 
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) 
  • Hepatitis B (3-Part Series: First shot must be done before registration and the final shot must be completed by the time the clinical portion begins) 
  • Varicella/Chicken Pox 
  • Tdap (Tetanus-Diptheria-Pertussis) 
  • Seasonal Influenza (Current Season) 
  • TB/Mantoux (Must be current and completed within 90 days prior to registration. Please note that TB testing cannot be completed in one visit to your clinic. The process may take multiple visits and up to one week to complete. Please allow sufficient time to complete the test).
  • Covid 19 (minimum 2 shots)
** If you do not have records for any of the above immunizations and think you may have immunity already, you will need to contact your medical provider and ask for “immunity status testing” or a “titer test” to obtain proof of your immunity. Please note that titer testing cannot be completed in one visit to your clinic. The process may take multiple visits and up to one week to complete. Please allow sufficient time to complete the test. **

- State of MN DHS Background Check: Please bring a copy of your Driver License or State ID to the registration session, as it is required for background check processing. 
- A high school diploma/GED is required in order to secure employment.  
- For employment purposes, participants must have the ability to stand for most of an 8-hour shift. 

Test Scheduling Instructions: 
Prior to registration, you must either take the Accuplacer Reading exam (available at the HTC Testing Center free of charge) or provide copies of official transcripts confirming qualifications for a test waiver. 

Prerequisite Qualifications: 
  • HTC Accuplacer Reading Exam Passing Score
    • Classic Test: 56 or Higher 
    • Next Gen Test: 228 or Higher 
  • If you have transcripts confirming completion of a college-level English course with a C letter grade or higher, you may qualify for a test waiver. 
To initiate the test waiver or Accuplacer exam scheduling process, please e-mail CTS Registration at cts.registration@hennepintech.edu and identify the course you are interested in registering for. CTS Registration will serve as the liaison for exam scheduling through the HTC Testing Center and will assess test waiver qualifications. Upon presenting your passing test score or waiver verification to CTS Registration, CTS will maintain copies of these documents and move forward in processing course registration.  (See below for detailed course registration instructions).

This course is approved under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) allowing qualifying participants to receive tuition reimbursement. To determine your eligibility status, please contact your local CareerForce center. 
Please note that courses offered through Continuing Education and Customized Training are not Financial Aid eligible; however, as noted above, you may seek funding or assistance from an outside source such as a Government Program, Workforce Agency, Employment Center or Employer.

Required Registration Documentation: 
The following items will need to be presented at the time of registration: 
1. Signed Waiver/Release/Indemnification Agreement (Provided via E-mail or in person when registration is open) 

2. CTS Registration Form 
3. Payment in Full: 
  • Personal Payment: Check, Cash or Credit Card (VISA, MasterCard or Discover), or… 
  • 3rd Party Payment Form Options: 
    • Completed CTS 3rd Party Payment Form, or… 
    • Other Form: Any PO or Payment Authorization Form completed and provided by the 3rd party organization 
4. Immunization Documents from a Medical Professional (See prerequisite section above for complete list of required immunizations).  
  • Please note that school immunization records (including immunization records from HTC) will not be accepted, as clinical site require medical records confirming dates of immunizations or immunity testing directly from a medical professional. 
5. Results confirming your qualifying Accuplacer exam score or test waiver verification 
6. Driver License or State ID for State of MN DHS Background Check Processing 
  • Background Check: Minnesota Law requires that any person who provides services that involve direct contact with patients have a background study conducted by the state. An individual who is disqualified from having direct patient contact as a result of the background study, and whose disqualification is not set aside by the Commissioner of Health, will not be permitted to participate in a clinical placement in a Minnesota licensed health care facility. The college will withdraw any student who is disqualified by the Minnesota Department of Health. The student is responsible for requesting the Commissioner to reconsider the disqualification.
