Join us at the SCSU Alnwick Castle June 22-25, 2022 for dialogue, discussion and critical debate on how we all envision re-connecting with China moving forward. The time warp of people to people in-person exchanges, conferences, events, etc. since 2020 has had an immense impact on partnerships, relationships, programs and all people who work in building bridges with China.

The vision for this annual conference is to gather those who are passionate about people to people exchange, civil society and educational diplomacy with China. We believe that bringing great minds for dialogue and discussion together results in new innovative ideas and approaches for addressing the challenges all of us are confronted with today in our relations with China. The goal is to have the location of the Alnwick Castle in the U.K. be a place where the politics of your country and relationship with China are respected, but where the focus is on the people who we all have come to know and value in our lives. This conference is for the next generation of bridge builders, the kindergarteners in Chinese immersion programs, the high school students learning Chinese for the first time, the university students who worked so hard on becoming fluent in Chinese, dreaming of working in a career that values this hard work and determination. And for all of us who know that China cannot be left behind. It is going to take all of us, viewing the relationships and partnerships through cross-cultural lenses, working together on discovering solutions to the complexities of the re-engagement of the world with China.

You will not be asked to prepare any ppt or log onto any Zoom meeting. We aspire all to be fully present for this in-person gathering. Space will be created to promote safe, honest dialogue sessions where we all listen, learn and advance greater knowledge and understanding of how to move forward into the knowns and unknowns of 2023 and beyond. Space will be created for sharing meals together, for walking in the parks around the Castle and learning of the rich history of the area. Special tours will be made available to also learn more about the community. The theme of this first annual conference is “Finding Firmer Ground: The Role of Education in Re-engaging with China.” This theme is founded upon the recent report by the Carter Center titled, “Finding Firmer Ground: The Role of Higher Education in U.S. China Relations.” The annual themes will be determined at the beginning of each academic year. A secondary goal of the conference is for us all to think creatively on how the SCSU Branch Campus of Alnwick Castle may serve as an educational exchange venue for students from around the world to come together and learn about China. The Alnwick Castle is where the original Harry Potter was filmed so numerous opportunities exist in this space.
